Collect Cards For Joy & Profit
Collecting trading cards is an exciting hobby. There are so many games now and new releases are frequent enough to keep enthusiasts thoroughly engaged. There are games to suit everyone. Personally, I like the art of a series like Magic The Gathering, but also appreciate the cards from Pokemon and other games of Japanese origin which tend to be more colourful and spectacular, if a little cutesy.
So why collect trading cards?
There are multiple reasons why collecting trading cards is a great idea from both a fun and potential earning/investment point of view.
There is a lot of buzz in the trading card space these days
There are new releases every year, often several times a year
They have a practical use if your an active player of the game you choose to collect
You can play the game and largely avoid damaging your cards if your careful enough
They are a standardized size which makes them very easy to store.
A growing number of tools makes cataloging your collection increasingly easy, like Delver Lens.
There are a variety of quite active marketplaces for you to buy and sell your cards
Getting into the hobby is quite inexpensive. Card packs generally cost less than $10.
You are collecting something tangible and physical. Not something based on code which can be hacked.
There is a long history associated with the hobby, in all sorts of fantasy and sports cards.
Some of these cards can be worth significant sums and you may strike it lucky for likely little outlay.
But without doubt, the biggest reason for me is just the mystery and excitement involved in opening every new pack. You just never know what you might uncover and it could be worth a tidy sum for the cost of a burger or a couple coffees.
Convinced? Good. Hows What You Need To Get Started
Starting out in this hobby is quite easy. Perhaps the hardest aspect is just the sheer volume of options available and understanding how each game works. How companies behind these games have constructed the mechanics to the game. In particular, having a feel for where trends might be headed in future may enable you to pick up cards that are likely to appreciate in interest and therefore value.Even as a collector, it is useful to develop a rudimentary grasp of how your chosen game is actually played to fully engage iand appreciate the collecting aspect. There are thousands of videos and articles to read to get you up to speed. Playing your chosen game in regular workshops and meetups will allow you to improvide your knowledge quickly. There are some fundamental tools you will need for collecting and they can be basically broken down into…
When you open new packs you need to be careful to handle your cards correctly and dont over handle them. Observe each card, examine it, scan it into your chosen cataloging app, sleeve it and potentially, pop up into a box, binder or a top loader. Obviously you want to make sure your hands are free of any sort of residue which could damage cards. Basically, just follow common sense.
There are A LOT of storage options. And it actually can be reasonably expensive if you go for the fancy storage options. You can start with some basic B&W cardboard boxes, from a site like The Card & Trinket. If your very much about collecting, rather than playing, you will want to sleeve your card straight after scanning it. My personal approach to storage is a mixture of safety and practical costs. There is no point spending $40 on a binder for cards valued at $0.03 cents. Pop them in a “penny sleeve”, the cheapest there is and store them in any cardboard or plastic box designed for the purpose. For mid range cards, generally low end rares, mythic and foils, you probably want to move to a binder. Again, it doesnt need to be expensive, but it will offer a step up in terms of presentation and protection. Dragon Shield binders are very nice. For valuable cards, lets say well $100 and over, I would use a high quality loose fit sleeve and pop it into a top loaderFor cards into the hundreds of dollars, cards you might be keen to have professionally graded at some point, I would use a specific sleeve designed for grading (generally one that enables the grader to remove the card from the sleeve with minimal chance of damaging it) and pop that into a top loader. For really valuable cards, consider a one touch case and maybe you need to consider private or public safe storage.
There is an abundance of apps for this purpose
TGC Player is probably number 1 simply because it has the greatest pedigree and established marketplace.
Delver Lens is, without doubt, the best scanner available and it also has the best export.
Dragon Shield is coming up. The TGC Player scanner has solid export but its scanning is poor.
Card Forge - This is a game as well as cataloging style service. Based on Java with an old school interface.
Scryfall is essentially a database tool and its insanely comprehensive. It is my go-to for images and info.
Wizards Of The Coast are the designers and distributors of MTG and there official site is first port of call.
Cards are categorised according to their condition. The better the condition, the greater the price, although generally speaking we only stock unplayed cards. This is how I personally break-up card grades into categories.
|Graded||Cards graded with TCG will vary on their scale from 5 to 10|
|Mint||New and packaged|
|Near Mint||Opened, lightly handled for scanning and put into storage.|
|Lightly Played||Used as an actual playing card. Can show some slight signs of wear.|
|Damaged||The card has visible signs of minor to moderate damage. See card notes.|
We arrive at pricing based on the following conditions
The market is the go-to metric. Cards fluctuate in price constantly.
Prices are generally based off the “market price”.
Foils are likely to be rarer and are always more expensive than normal cards.
Condition is important. Most of our cards are near mint, so for us its not so relevant
Prices are revised from time to time, normally when i update any given set
If you think a price is inflated, you can submit a query on “pricing” and we will get back to you
Please dont hesitate to contact us about the pricing of any cards in the collection. We are happy to take onboard feedback and make adjustments. In particular, we are likely to package up bulk cards of cents value into a discounted package, but its not an automated process, so please contact us if you are interested in bulk options.
